Do you have two cars along with too many must-have-items with monetary value that need to be stored in your garage, also? Or those over-grown young adults that haven't moved out of the nest, yet? Whatever the reason may be, three car garages are becoming increasingly common to have for the reasons listed above, plus many more.
WHAT SIZES SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR?
The minimum for a three-car garage Dimensions should be no less than 30 x 20, this is just enough space for three regular sized cars leaving you with a tiny amount of wiggle room to squeeze out of without scratching the adjacent cars. Don't expect much storage space with this size. This size is recommended for people that already have sheds or work shops outside of the compounds of a garage.
The recommended dimensions if you're wanting extra space would be 36 x 24. A three-car garage with 40 x 30 dimensions is suggested if you have three cars and a lawnmower or dirt bike, work bench, etc.
CAN I GET CREATIVE WITH A THREE-CAR GARAGE PLAN?
You sure can, if you're not in need of space for three cars but want the space for three, you can make a layout that leaves two cars side by side and the third space intersecting horizontally for a separate work area that will leave you from accidentally scraping your car or just leave you feeling like you have a cozy domain all for your hobbies alone.
HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST ME?
The prices do vary based on dimensions, extra fixtures, and how elaborate of a design you have.
For the minimum 30 x 20, you're looking at $14,000, 36 x 24 and the cost goes up to $18,900, 40 x 30 will set you back $24,000 +/- not including lighting, ventilation, etc. Also factor in the cost for your construction plans, and building permits, contact a building inspector for assistance.
HOW SHOULD I BEGIN THIS PROCESS?
Contact your local authority before commencement of this project to ensure everything being done is done legally. Get your application for them accepted, and the permit issued by your local authority, there are a number of documents that you will need to organize and present to the building department in order to get the garage building permits issued so that you can legally carry on with building a garage.
You can even add an extra room above the roof of the garage or add an exterior hallway and separate two of the three car spaces and rent out a room for extra income. Of course, things like extra plumbing, lighting, windows, etc, need to go into this project, but the extra monthly income will pay it all back and then some.
